Coal Share of Electricity by Country 2022
Share of each country's electricity that was generated from coal in 2022, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
2022 was the year Europe burned more coal to replace Russian gas, and the ranking reflects it: Poland at 69.8%, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 67.6%, Serbia at 67.4%, Czechia at 44.0% and Bulgaria at 43.3% put five European countries in the top thirteen, more than in any later year of this series. South Africa led at 84.4% and India followed at 74.5%. China at 61.2% and Indonesia at 61.5% were nearly identical, though China's grid was roughly 27 times larger.
