Coal Share of Electricity by Country 2024
Share of each country's electricity that was generated from coal in 2024, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
South Africa is the most coal-dependent large grid in the world at 83.5%, followed by India at 74.5%. Scale matters more than rank in this table: India and China sit at second and ninth, but between them they generate over 12,000 TWh, so their coal shares represent more coal power than every other country listed combined. China's 57.8% is the lowest figure in the top nine yet covers a 10,087 TWh system. Poland at 54.3% is the only EU member in the ranking, and Australia at 45.2% the only high-income one outside Europe.
