Countries With the Most Carbon-Intensive Electricity 2024
Carbon intensity of electricity generation in 2024, in grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour, ranked from highest. A higher number means a more fossil-heavy grid. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Turkmenistan's grid emits 1306 gCO2/kWh, a quarter more than second-placed Uzbekistan at 1040 g and roughly 56 times the figure for Ethiopia, the cleanest grid measured. The list splits into two groups: gas-burning Central Asian and Gulf systems at the top, and coal-based economies including South Africa at 718 g, India at 707 g and Indonesia at 681 g. India is the one that moves global totals, since its 2,037 TWh is larger than every other grid in this ranking put together.
