Electricity Generation per Person by Country 2024
This chart ranks countries by electricity generated per person in 2024, measured in kilowatt-hours. It reflects both energy-intensive industry and domestic consumption, divided by population.
About This Dataset
Electricity Generation per Person by Country 2024Iceland leads with 48,424 kWh per person, roughly 72% more than second-placed Norway on 28,173 and around three times the level of Canada or Sweden. Iceland's figure has little to do with household use: cheap geothermal and hydro power attracted aluminium smelters, which now consume the majority of the island's electricity, so a population of 400,000 generates as much as a country many times its size. Norway follows the same hydro-plus-industry pattern. The Gulf states form the other bloc, with Bahrain on 23,615, Kuwait on 18,744, Qatar on 18,593 and the UAE on 16,075, where cheap fuel powers desalination and year-round air conditioning. Bhutan's 13,897 is the outlier, driven entirely by Himalayan hydropower.
