About This Dataset
Countries with the Highest Road Traffic Death RatesRoad-traffic deaths are concentrated in Africa, which holds nine of the twelve highest-rate countries. Zimbabwe tops the list at 41.2 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Liberia (38.9) and Eritrea (37.9) - rates roughly ten times higher than the safest European countries. South Sudan (36.7), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (34.9) and Namibia (34.8) also rank near the top. Vietnam (30.6) is the only Asian entry in the group, reflecting the dangers of rapid motorisation with heavy motorcycle use. The high rates in these countries stem from poor road infrastructure, older and less safe vehicles, limited traffic enforcement, and weak emergency medical care that turns crashes into fatalities. Unlike many health measures, road deaths hit working-age adults hardest, making them a major economic as well as human toll.
