Uruguay won the very first World Cup in 1930 and stood alone at the top until Italy's back-to-back titles in 1934 and 1938 pushed it ahead on two. Uruguay drew level again with its 1950 win, and for two decades the summit was shared.
Brazil changed that. After its first title in 1958 it took sole ownership of first place with its third in 1970, and it has never been caught since — reaching four in 1994 and five in 2002, a lead it still holds today. Behind Brazil the chase has been tight: Germany and Italy both climbed to four titles (Italy's fourth in 2006, Germany's in 2014), while Argentina reached three with its 2022 win.
The 2026 tournament added the latest movement lower down the board. Spain beat Argentina in the final to win its second title, joining Uruguay and France on two, while Argentina held on three and England stayed on the single title it has had since 1966.
One figure that looks odd but is correct: Germany's total of four combines West Germany's wins in 1954, 1974 and 1990 with reunified Germany's 2014 triumph. FIFA counts them as the same nation, which is why the count never resets despite the country's mid-century division.
