About this chart race
China ranks first in every annual observation in this 1992-2024 series. India first produces more wheat than the United States in 1995. By 2024, the leading three are China (140.10 million tonnes), India (113.29 million tonnes) and Russia (82.59 million tonnes). China's lead over India at that endpoint is 26.81 million tonnes.
Between 1992 and 2024, China's wheat output rises by 37.9% and India's by 103.4% in the downloaded series. These are endpoint comparisons, not claims of uninterrupted growth. Annual production measures harvested wheat, not wheat exports, stocks, yields per hectare, flour output or the size of a country's economy.
The dataset is FAOSTAT's wheat production series, processed by Our World in Data, with source update February 25, 2026 and retrieved October 18, 2026. FAO defines cereal production here as dry grain harvested during the reported year; crops cut green or for hay, silage or grazing are excluded. National crop-year labels can differ from the FAOSTAT reporting year: India's official 2023/24 wheat estimate is about 113.29 million tonnes, consistent at that precision with the series' 2024 value. China's government reports about 140.10 million tonnes for 2024. Cross-checks support the scale of those endpoints; all imported values consistently use the same FAOSTAT/OWID series.
Included are the 14 ISO-coded countries that reach an annual top ten between 1992 and 2024; each has all 33 annual observations. Ten appear at a time. Regions, World, the European Union and former-country aggregates are excluded to avoid counting overlapping totals. Starting in 1992 avoids treating the Soviet Union as Russia. Values are converted from tonnes to million tonnes and rounded to four decimal places for storage; the animation displays two decimals. The dataset may include estimates and revisions. Motion between annual values is interpolation, not extra observations; there are no 2025/26 figures or forecasts.

This animated ranking shows how annual wheat production changed across 14 series between 1992 and 2024. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2024, China leads with 140.10 million tonnes.
