About this chart race
Real Madrid won the first five European Cups, from 1956 to 1960, and has led this table in every one of the 71 seasons since. No club has ever drawn level, let alone gone ahead. The strange part is how little winning it took: after the 1966 title Real Madrid went 32 years without another European Cup, until 1998, and led the whole way through.
The closest anyone came was Milan. For four straight seasons, 1994 through 1997, Milan sat on five titles to Real Madrid's six. Then Real Madrid won in 1998, 2000 and 2002 and the chase was finished. Milan has now spent 37 of the 71 seasons as the runner-up in this race, more than Benfica (12) and Ajax (11) combined, and has not won the trophy since 2007.
Underneath the top two the order moves constantly, with 93 changes of position inside the top ten. Ajax went from outside it to second in three seasons by winning 1971, 1972 and 1973; Bayern Munich answered immediately with 1974, 1975 and 1976. Liverpool climbed to third in 2019 and Bayern took the place straight back in 2020. The two finish level on six titles each.
The newest name is the most striking. Paris Saint-Germain had never won the competition before 2025, then won it twice in a row - the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid's run of 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the first French winner since Marseille in 1993. Two titles already draws PSG level with Benfica, Juventus, Porto and Chelsea. All of them are still behind Nottingham Forest, whose two wins in 1979 and 1980 remain more than Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund have ever managed.
