About this chart race
France has crowned 87 champions in 94 professional seasons. Six of the missing years are the Second World War, when the league was suspended from 1940 to 1945. The seventh is 1993: Marseille finished top, then were stripped of the title after their president was found guilty of bribing opposing players, and no champion was declared at all.
The all-time lead has changed hands slowly. Stade de Reims led through the late 1950s. Saint-Étienne caught them in 1970 and went clear in 1974, winning ten titles in twenty-five years. Their tenth, in 1981, was also their last - and they still stayed at the top of the all-time table for another 41 years, because nobody else was winning fast enough to catch them.
Paris Saint-Germain finally did. Their first title came in 1986 and their second in 1994, then almost nothing until 2013. Since then they have won 12 of 14 seasons, drew level with Saint-Étienne on 10 in 2022 and passed them in 2023. They now have 14.
Behind them: Marseille 9, Monaco 8, Nantes 8, Lyon 7 - all seven of Lyon's in a row from 2002 to 2008, still a French record - Reims 6, Bordeaux 6, Lille 5 and Nice 4. Only professional-era titles are counted here, which is why Marseille show 9 rather than the 10 they claim; their extra one is the amateur championship of 1929, won before the professional league existed.
This animated ranking shows how cumulative french league titles changed across 18 series between 1933 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2026, Paris Saint-Germain leads with 14.
