Barcelona won the very first Spanish championship in 1929, but the club that spent the next quarter of a century on top was Athletic Bilbao. Athletic led the all-time table for 26 years in total, and as late as 1952 Real Madrid had only two titles and sat fifth.
The lead changed hands five times, and all of it happened before 1963: Athletic Bilbao took it in 1930, Barcelona in 1953, Athletic again in 1956, Barcelona in 1959, and Real Madrid in 1963. Real Madrid have held it every year since - 64 straight years - built on five titles in a row from 1961 to 1965 and eight in the 1960s alone.
Real Madrid's lead peaked at 15 titles in 1990, when they had 25 to Barcelona's 10. Barcelona have closed most of that gap since: seven titles in the 2010s and three more in the 2020s took them to 29 with the 2025-26 championship, seven behind Real Madrid's 36.
Behind the two giants, Atletico Madrid have 11 titles, Athletic Bilbao 8 and Valencia 6. Only nine clubs have ever been champions of Spain: Real Sociedad have two, and Deportivo La Coruna (2000), Sevilla (1946) and Real Betis (1935) have one each.
No championship was played from 1936-37 to 1938-39 because of the Spanish Civil War, so every total holds flat across those three years. Atletico Madrid's first two titles, in 1940 and 1941, were won under the name Atletico Aviacion, and Real Madrid competed as Madrid FC from 1931 to 1941.
