About this chart race
Only two countries have ever led this table. Uruguay won the first South American Championship in 1916 and stood alone at the top for 29 years. Argentina drew level in 1946 and went ahead in 1947. Brazil, a five-time world champion, has never been in front of it for a single year.
Since then the outright lead has changed hands only four more times: Uruguay took it back in 1987, Argentina in 1993, Uruguay in 2011, and Argentina again in 2024. Since 1967 the two have never been more than one trophy apart, and they spent 1995 to 2010 dead level on 14 titles each - sixteen years without either moving ahead.
Argentina's 1-0 win over Colombia in the 2024 final, in Miami, made it 16 to Uruguay's 15. Brazil is third on 9. Below the top three the trophy has travelled widely: Paraguay, Chile and Peru have two each, Colombia and Bolivia one. Chile's back-to-back wins in 2015 and 2016 are the only titles won outside the big three since Colombia's in 2001.
A note on 1959: the tournament was played twice that year. Argentina won the edition held in Argentina and Uruguay won the one held in Ecuador, so both countries gain a title in the same step of the race.
