About this chart race

UEFA has only recorded assists in the Champions League since 2001-02, and the race opens with two players on two: Ryan Giggs and Xavi Hernández. Xavi edged ahead the following season, Giggs took the lead back in 2003-04, and then held it for thirteen straight seasons — long enough for the competition to change shape around him. He finished on 30, every one of them logged after UEFA began counting.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended that reign in 2016-17. He went into the season on 29 and came out of it on 35, six assists in a single campaign, and never gave the record back. He finishes the race on 42. What makes the top of this chart unusual is how tight it stays: Ángel Di María is on 41 and Lionel Messi on 40, so the three most creative careers in the competition's history are separated by a single assist each.

Di María is the quiet story. He was on 19 as recently as 2018-19 and added 22 more across his last seven seasons, passing Messi and closing to within one of Ronaldo. Behind them, Vinícius Júnior is fifth on 32 having played just eight Champions League seasons — already two clear of Giggs and Xavi, who needed careers twice as long.

Ten of the forty players here added assists in 2025-26, so this ranking is still moving. Every number is UEFA's own: each player's season-by-season figures were summed and checked against UEFA's published all-time list, and all forty totals matched exactly.

This animated ranking shows how champions league assists changed across 40 series between 2002 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. As of 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo leads with 42 assists.
