For twelve years the all-time World Cup goalscoring record belonged to Miroslav Klose, who finished his career on 16 goals across four tournaments. The 2026 World Cup did not merely break that record. It broke it twice, in the space of a few weeks.

Lionel Messi passed Klose during the tournament and ended his World Cup career on 21 goals. Kylian Mbappé then passed Messi, finishing 2026 as the tournament's top scorer with 10 goals and taking his career total to 22.

Twenty-two goals in twenty-two matches

The total is striking on its own. The rate is what separates it from everything else on the list. Mbappé has played 22 World Cup matches and scored 22 goals — exactly one for every appearance.

No other player near the top of the list comes close to that ratio. Messi's 21 goals came from 34 matches. Klose needed 24 matches for his 16. Cristiano Ronaldo, who has played more World Cup matches than any of them at 27, scored 11.

The only historical figure with a comparable strike rate is Just Fontaine, whose 13 goals came from just six matches at the 1958 tournament — but Fontaine played in only that one World Cup.

A record that almost never changes hands

FIFA recognises ten players as having held the all-time World Cup scoring record since 1930, counting those who held it jointly. In 96 years and 23 tournaments, the record has therefore moved only nine times — and two of those changes happened in 2026 alone.

That is what made the last tournament unusual. A record this slow-moving normally passes to one player every decade or two. In 2026 it passed twice before the final was played.

Who else is on the list

Behind Mbappé and Messi, the all-time list runs Klose on 16, Ronaldo on 15, then Gerd Müller and Harry Kane level on 14, Fontaine on 13 and Pelé on 12. Below them sit Sándor Kocsis, Jürgen Klinsmann and Cristiano Ronaldo, all on 11.

Harry Kane's presence at joint fifth is easy to overlook. He was the top scorer of the 2018 tournament with six goals and has added steadily since, reaching a total that took Gerd Müller two World Cups and a different era of football to accumulate.
