pH of Human Body FluidsThe body maintains an enormous internal range of acidity, spanning nearly seven pH units - and since pH is logarithmic, gastric acid (≈1.5) is roughly a million times more acidic than bile (≈8.4). This spread is functional: highly acidic stomach fluid breaks down food and kills pathogens, while alkaline pancreatic juice (8.0) and bile (8.4) neutralise that acid as it enters the intestine so enzymes can work. Blood sits in a very tight band around 7.4 - the body defends this value fiercely, as even small deviations are life-threatening - while saliva (6.7), urine (6.0) and skin (5.5) are mildly acidic. The contrast shows how the body deploys precisely tuned pH environments for digestion, protection and transport, each isolated from the others.
