Most Spoken Languages by Native Speakers
About This Dataset
Most Spoken Languages by Native Speakers
Ranked by native speakers, English falls to third. Its global reach comes from the roughly one billion people who speak it as a second language, who are not counted here. Mandarin's total is itself a simplification, since "Chinese" covers several mutually unintelligible varieties. Hindi and Bengali counts shift depending on which closely related dialects each source folds in.
Analysis
Mandarin Chinese heads the table on 920, ahead of Spanish (480) and English (380) in Native Speakers (Millions). 795 separates the highest figure (920) from the lowest (125). Most of that gap is between first and second alone (440 of 795); the other 7 are separated by just 355. Only 2 of the 8 reach even half the leader's figure (460 or more).
