Countries ranked by total carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes in 2025, measured in million tonnes according to Global Carbon Project and IEA Greenhouse Gas Emissions data. China accounts for approximately 31% of global CO2 emissions — a share that reflects both its position as the world's largest manufacturing economy and its continued reliance on coal-fired power generation, which supplies over 55% of Chinese electricity. Despite leading the world in solar and wind installation capacity, China's absolute emissions continue to rise as energy demand from its industrial base and expanding middle class outpaces the deployment of clean generation capacity.
