Largest Planets in the Solar System

About This Dataset

Largest Planets in the Solar System
The eight planets of our solar system ranked by diameter in kilometres. Jupiter is by far the largest planet, with a diameter of nearly 143,000 km — over 11 times the diameter of Earth — and a mass greater than all other planets combined.
✨ AI Insight

The stark contrast in size among the planets is evident, with Jupiter's diameter dwarfing that of the smaller planets. Saturn, while the second largest at 120,536 km, is still over 22,000 km smaller than Jupiter, highlighting the immense scale of the gas giants. The terrestrial planets, including Earth (12,742 km), Venus (12,104 km), Mars (6,779 km), and Mercury (4,879 km), are significantly smaller, with diameters that are less than a third of Jupiter's. This disparity suggests that the formation of gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn involved different processes compared to the rocky planets, possibly due to their ability to capture more gas during the early solar system's development.
