Fastest Marine Animals in the World
About This Dataset
Fastest Marine Animals in the World
Marine animals ranked by their maximum recorded swimming speed in km/h. The sailfish is the fastest animal in the ocean, capable of reaching speeds up to 110 km/h in short bursts while hunting prey — a speed achieved through a combination of its crescent-shaped tail fin, streamlined body, and the ability to retract its iconic dorsal sail to reduce drag at full sprint.
Analysis
Sailfish (110), Marlin (80) and Wahoo (78) take the top three in Maximum Speed (km/h). Values run from 110 at the top to 55 at the bottom in Maximum Speed (km/h), a spread of 55. Most of that gap is between first and second alone (30 of 55); the other 7 are separated by just 25. Below the top two the field is tightly packed: the remaining 6 run from 78 down to 55 Maximum Speed (km/h).
