Holding the most items and attracting the most readers are different achievements. This chart ranks major world libraries by reported visitors per year, in millions, among those on the list of the world's largest libraries that publish a figure.
Analysis
New York Public Library reports the most visitors at 18.00 million a year, ahead of Toronto Public Library on 13.40 million. Size and footfall do not track each other: the largest library by collection is not the busiest, because a national archive's readership is specialised while a big public library serves a whole city.
