Deepest Lakes in the World

About This Dataset

Deepest Lakes in the World
Lake depth is measured at the deepest sounded point, which is often far from the shore and much deeper than the lake's average. This chart ranks the world's deepest lakes by maximum recorded depth in metres; a few figures are given as approximate in the source.
Analysis

Baikal is the deepest lake on earth at 1,642 metres, 172 metres deeper than Tanganyika at 1,470. Only 3 of these 12 lakes pass 1,000 metres, and the drop after them is steep: the shallowest lake on this chart, Matano, reaches 590 metres, so Baikal is 2.8 times deeper than the last entry shown. 2 of the figures shown are marked approximate in the source, including the subglacial lakes measured through ice rather than by direct sounding.
