Largest Data Breaches of All Time
About This Dataset
Largest Data Breaches of All Time
Security incidents ranked by the number of records exposed, as reported at the time. A record is not a person: one breach can hold several rows for the same customer, and companies have an obvious incentive to report the smallest defensible figure, so these counts are floors rather than measurements.
Analysis
WhatsApp tops the list with 3,587,788,782 records exposed in 2025, 1.20 times the 3,000,000,000 of Yahoo. The 12 incidents here exposed 16,467,003,077 records between them. They span 2013 to 2025, and 6 of the 12 are recorded as hacks rather than accidental exposure. The smallest breach on this chart still exposed 412,214,295 records.
