About This Dataset

Countries with the Least Access to Electricity 2024
The twenty countries with the lowest access to electricity (% of population) in 2024, from World Bank figures for the 215 countries that reported that year. South Sudan records the lowest figure at 5.40, with Chad (13.40) and Malawi (15.60) next. The share of people with access to electricity, from household surveys and utility records. Access means a connection, not a reliable supply, and a country can report high access alongside daily outages.
Analysis

South Sudan (5.40), Chad (13.40) and Malawi (15.60) record the three lowest figures. Across the twenty shown, values run from 5.40 up to 53.80, a spread of 48.40. Chad, the next country up, records 2.48 times the figure for South Sudan. No other country in the table is within double the lowest figure of 5.40. The chart shows the twenty lowest of 215 reporting countries, so it describes the bottom of the distribution rather than the world average. Countries recorded as zero are left out: the World Bank writes zero where a country did not report.

How the figures are calculated

  • Entities are ranked lowest-first, because on this measure a lower number is the better result.
