About This Dataset
The World's Largest Countries by Area 2023
Countries ranked by surface area (million km2) in 2023, using World Bank figures for the 215 countries that reported that year. Russia leads on 17.13, ahead of Canada (15.63) and United States (9.83). Total surface area, including inland water bodies and, where claimed, coastal waterways. It is larger than the land area often quoted for the same country.
Analysis
Russia (17.13), Canada (15.63) and United States (9.83) take the top three. Across the twenty shown, values run from 17.13 down to 1.28, a spread of 15.85. Only 1.50 separates Russia from Canada in second, 8.8% of the leading figure. 4 of the 20 reach half the leading figure, 8.57 or more. The chart shows the twenty highest of 215 reporting countries, so it describes the top of the distribution rather than the world average.
