Education Spending as a Share of Government Expenditure, 2023The percentage divides government education expenditure by total government expenditure. A value of 25% means roughly one quarter of recorded government spending went to education. It is different from education spending as a share of GDP, spending per student or the amount spent in dollars.
All ten observations refer to 2023 and are rounded to one decimal place. They are the ten highest available values in the World Bank series checked on 12 October 2026; countries without a 2023 observation are excluded rather than assigned zero.
A larger budget share does not establish better school outcomes or greater spending per student. Use this comparison to examine budget allocation, and consult the indicator's definitions before comparing government coverage across countries. Historical observations can be revised.
The displayed shares range from Kenya's 25.0% to Kiribati's 21.6%, a gap of 3.4 percentage points. Solomon Islands reports 23.2%, followed by Sint Maarten at 23.0%. Uzbekistan and Guatemala both display 22.6% after rounding; this does not mean their unrounded values are identical. All ten displayed shares exceed one fifth of government expenditure. These figures describe allocation within each government's budget, not the total size of that budget or the reasons for its allocation.
