About This Dataset
Brazilian Football Titles by StateSao Paulo state leads with 34 titles, nearly double Rio de Janeiro's 19, and together the two states account for 53 of Brazil's championships. This is the sharpest regional concentration in the country's football, and it tracks economic power closely, as Sao Paulo and Rio are Brazil's two wealthiest and most populous states. Minas Gerais are a distant third on seven, drawn from Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro, followed by Rio Grande do Sul on five. The rest of this vast country barely registers: Bahia and Parana have two each and Pernambuco one, meaning the entire north and northeast of Brazil have produced just three national champions in the competition's history.
