Largest Sharks by Length

About This Dataset

Largest Sharks by Length
The largest shark species by maximum reliably measured length, in metres. The whale shark is by far the biggest, reaching around 18 metres - the largest fish of any kind alive today - yet it feeds harmlessly on tiny plankton.
✨ AI Insight

The whale shark (18 m) utterly dominates, roughly half again as long as the second-place basking shark (12.27 m), and the two giants dwarf every predatory shark below them. Crucially, the two largest sharks are both gentle filter-feeders that strain plankton from the water - size and ferocity are unrelated. The famous hunters trail far behind: the tiger shark (7.4 m) and great white (7 m) are less than half the whale shark's length, and the great hammerhead (6.1 m) smaller still. The pattern overturns a common intuition: the ocean's biggest sharks are not its most dangerous, while the fearsome predators of popular imagination are middling in size compared with the plankton-eating leviathans above them.
