About this chart race
In 2009 Internet Explorer carried 59.1% of the world's web traffic and Firefox carried 30.2%. Between them they were 89.3% of the internet. Chrome, released the previous year, was on 3.2% - behind Safari.
Chrome caught Internet Explorer in 2012 and the year ended almost level: 29.66% to 29.30%, a gap of a third of a point. In 2013 it was over. Chrome finished on 34.7% against Internet Explorer's 23.2% and has led every year since, reaching 68.9% in 2025.
The collapse of the other two is the real story. Internet Explorer fell from 59.1% to 0.15%, dropping out of the top three in 2016 and out of relevance entirely. Firefox, which was the browser that broke Microsoft's monopoly, went from 30.4% at its 2010 peak to 2.4%. Together the two browsers that were 89.3% of the web in 2009 are 2.5% of it now.
Second place changed hands quietly. Safari climbed from 3.4% and third in 2009 to 16.0% and second in 2025, carried by the iPhone rather than the desktop. Microsoft's replacement browser, Edge, first registers in 2020 at 1.5% and reaches 5.0% and third by 2025 - roughly a twelfth of what Internet Explorer held when this chart starts. Nokia, BlackBerry and IEMobile were all in the 2009 top ten and none of them survive to 2025.
This animated ranking shows how share of web traffic changed across 13 series between 2009 and 2025. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2025, Chrome leads with 68.9 %.
