About this chart race
In 2009 there was barely a contest. Windows accounted for 94.03 percent of the world's web traffic across every device type — desktops, phones, tablets and consoles combined — while Android, launched the year before, registered 0.02 percent. Apple's desktop platform sat at 4.24 percent and iOS at 0.35.
The crossover came in 2017, when Android reached 40.06 percent against Windows' 38.11, and it has led every year since. Neither figure moved because one platform out-competed the other on the desktop; the world simply started reaching the internet from a phone instead. By 2025 Android and iOS together account for 62.87 percent of all web traffic.
Windows ends the race on 28.72 percent — 30.5 percent of the share it held in 2009, so it kept under a third of what it had. Its low point was 27.59 percent in 2024, and 2025 is a slight recovery. Apple is the desktop platform that grew rather than shrank: macOS went from 4.24 to 6.06 percent, and Linux from 0.68 to 1.53.
The lower half of the chart is a graveyard of platforms that once looked permanent. Symbian peaked at 1.96 percent in 2012, Nokia's Series 40 at 2.2 percent in 2013 and BlackBerry OS at 0.71 percent in 2011; none of the three reaches a tenth of a percent after 2018. One note on method: StatCounter reports Apple's desktop platform under two separate labels, "OS X" and "macOS", in recent years. They are combined here, so Apple appears as a single bar rather than being split into two.
