About this chart race
Facebook has led every reading since January 2010, and reached 85.9% in 2017 before falling back to 71.3% by August 2026. Second place has changed hands repeatedly: StumbleUpon until 2012, Pinterest through most of the 2010s, Twitter and Instagram in the 2020s, and YouTube on 8.2% at the latest reading. StumbleUpon, which led the whole field in 2009, and MySpace both fall to effectively zero.
This animated ranking shows how share of social media referrals changed across 21 series between 2009 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2026, Facebook leads with 71.3 %.
