About this chart race
The Tour de France has been won 106 times by 64 different riders since 1903, and 42 of them won it exactly once. Maurice Garin took the first edition; the top of this chart then changed hands 14 times before it settled into the deadlock it ends on.
The summit is a five-way tie. Jacques Anquetil reached five wins first, in 1964 (1957, then 1961 to 1964). Eddy Merckx matched him in 1974, Bernard Hinault in 1985 and Miguel Induráin in 1995 — each roughly a decade after the last. Then the club closed for 31 years, until Tadej Pogačar won his fifth in 2026.
Induráin is the only one of the five who won his five back to back, from 1991 through 1995. Anquetil and Merckx each managed four in a row. Pogačar's came in two bursts — 2020 and 2021, then 2024, 2025 and 2026 — with Jonas Vingegaard taking the two Tours in between. Chris Froome, on four, is the only other rider still close.
Three gaps in the chart are real rather than missing data. No Tour was held from 1915 to 1918, or from 1940 to 1946, because of the two world wars. And the years 1999 to 2005 have no winner at all: Lance Armstrong's seven consecutive titles were stripped in 2012, and the organisers chose not to reassign them to anyone else.
This animated ranking shows how cumulative tour de france wins changed across 31 series between 1903 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2026, Tadej Pogačar leads with 5.
