About this chart race
The Stanley Cup Final era opens in 1915 with a team that no longer exists: the Vancouver Millionaires, champions in the first year the Cup was settled by a single series. The early 1920s then belonged to the original Ottawa Senators, who took four Cups — 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927 — and led the all-time count outright for most of the following decade. That franchise folded in the 1930s. The Ottawa Senators playing today are a different club, founded in 1992, and have never won the Cup.
Toronto and Montreal traded the lead for the next twenty years. Toronto moved in front in 1948, the two drew level in 1957 and again in 1964, and Montreal pulled clear for the last time in 1965. It has stayed in front for the 61 seasons since and finishes on 24 — though its most recent Cup was 1993, and Toronto's was 1967.
Behind them Detroit have 11, Boston and Chicago six each, Edmonton and Pittsburgh five. The Original Six clubs between them hold 64 of the 110 Cups ever awarded, or 58 percent, and the top three alone account for 48. Twenty-seven franchises have won the trophy and nine of them have won it exactly once.
Two years in the timeline are blank, and both are real rather than missing data: the 1919 Final was abandoned during the Spanish flu pandemic with no champion declared, and the whole 2004-05 season was lost to a lockout. At the other end of the chart the recent winners are newer names — Vegas took their first in 2023, Florida went back-to-back in 2024 and 2025, and Carolina won their second in 2026, twenty years after their first.
