About this chart race
The Dutch championship began in 1889, and its first fifteen years belonged to clubs that have long since disappeared from the top of the game. VV Concordia won the inaugural title. Koninklijke HFC took three in six years — 1890, 1893 and 1895 — before RAP Amsterdam answered with five between 1892 and 1899 to move clear on its own. HVV Den Haag overtook RAP in 1903, pushed the record to ten titles by 1914, and then never won again.
That total of ten stood as the mark to beat for the next forty-six years. Ajax drew level at ten in 1960 and moved ahead in 1966, and it has led the table in every season since — sixty years without being caught. It ends the race on 36 titles.
Behind Ajax sit PSV on 27 and Feyenoord on 16; between them the three clubs have won 79 of the 136 championships ever awarded, or 58 percent. The gap at the top is closing rather than widening. PSV won in 2024, 2025 and 2026, three in a row, while Ajax has not been champion since 2022 — Ajax’s lead over PSV has fallen from twelve titles to nine in the space of three seasons.
Two breaks in the timeline are real rather than missing data: no championship was awarded in 1945, and the 2019–20 season was abandoned during the COVID-19 pandemic with no title given. Lower down, the chart is a record of how much Dutch football has changed. Twenty-nine clubs have been champions and fifteen of them won exactly once. Sparta Rotterdam’s six titles are the fifth-highest of any club, but five came before 1916 and the last arrived in 1959. Since the Eredivisie was founded in 1957, only five clubs from outside the big three have won it: AZ Alkmaar twice, and Sparta, DOS Utrecht, DWS Amsterdam and FC Twente once each.
