About this chart race
The assist record has changed hands only five times in eighty seasons. Ernie Calverley set the first mark in the league's opening season of 1946-47 and held it until 1949. Andy Phillip took over in 1950 and led for eight years, Bob Cousy for eleven from 1958, and then Oscar Robertson held the record for twenty-two straight seasons, from 1969 to 1990 — the longest reign on this chart.
Magic Johnson finally passed him in 1990-91, and only just: 9,921 against Robertson's 9,887, a margin of 34 assists. It lasted four years. John Stockton went past 10,000 in 1994-95, the first player ever to do it, and has been number one ever since — thirty-two years and counting.
Nobody has come close since. Stockton finished on 15,806; Chris Paul, second all-time, is on 12,552, still 3,254 behind. Only eight players in NBA history have reached 10,000 career assists at all, and one of them is LeBron James, who sits fourth on 12,016 — remarkable for a player who has spent most of his career as a forward rather than a point guard.
Totals are Basketball-Reference's season-by-season figures, summed per player. BAA seasons from 1946-47 are included, as the NBA counts them in its own career records, and ABA totals are excluded for the same reason. As a check, every one of the 42 careers here matches Basketball-Reference's published career total exactly, and the season-end record holder computed from these rows reproduces Basketball-Reference's own progressive list of assist leaders for all eighty seasons.
This animated ranking shows how career assists changed across 42 series between 1947 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2026, John Stockton leads with 15,806 assists.
