About this chart race
Forbes has published a top ten of the world's highest-paid athletes every year since 2012, and in those fifteen lists the number one has changed hands ten times. Six different athletes have held it: Cristiano Ronaldo six times, Floyd Mayweather Jr. four, Lionel Messi twice, and Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Conor McGregor once each.
Only two athletes appear in all fifteen lists: Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James. Ronaldo entered in 2012 on $42.5m, the lowest figure of his fifteen years, and reached $300m in 2026 - seven times what he started on. LeBron James went from $53m to $137.8m over the same span without ever finishing first.
The single biggest year in the data is a tie. Floyd Mayweather Jr. earned $300m in 2015, the year of the Pacquiao fight, and Cristiano Ronaldo matched it exactly in 2026. Mayweather's totals are also the most jagged in the list: $85m in 2012, absent in 2013, $105m in 2014, $300m in 2015. Boxing pays in lumps, which is why he leaves the ranking entirely in the years between fights.
Athletes appearing and disappearing is a feature of this list rather than a gap in it. Forbes publishes only the top ten, so an athlete who slips to eleventh leaves the chart completely - seventeen of the forty-two names here appear exactly once. Nine sports are represented. American football supplies the most names, thirteen, and never the leader: the NFL salary cap produces plenty of $50-100m years and no $300m ones.
This animated ranking shows how annual earnings changed across 42 series between 2012 and 2026. The bars re-order themselves as the years advance, so overtakes are visible as they happen rather than hidden inside a table. Use the list on the left to choose exactly who competes, drag the slider to jump to any year, or open the table view to read the underlying numbers.
As of 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo leads with 300.0 US$ millions. The highest figure recorded anywhere in this data belongs to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (300.0).
