About this data

Earthquakes come from the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program feed, which lists every quake of about magnitude 4.5 and above anywhere on Earth. Smaller quakes are only fully recorded in well-monitored regions, so counting from 4.5 keeps recent days comparable with each other. The M4.5+ totals before about 2004 are lower than in later years, most likely because fewer stations were reporting; for long-run comparisons the M6+ and M7+ columns are the reliable ones. This page stores each day's count itself, which is what makes the comparisons above possible; the USGS feed on its own only shows the latest events.
