Container Port Traffic by Country, Historical Data 2010-2023
Container throughput handled by each country's ports, measured in millions of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), at five benchmark years between 2010 and 2023. Figures cover all container port activity in the country rather than a single port. Twelve of the world's largest container-handling nations are shown.

China handled 278.8 million TEU in 2023, five times the United States total and almost as much as the other eleven countries here combined, and 105% above its 2010 level. Vietnam grew fastest, from 6.4 to 21.1 million TEU, a 230% rise that carried it past Spain, the Netherlands and Hong Kong. India added 141%. Hong Kong is the only territory in this group that shrank, falling 40% from 23.7 to 14.3 million TEU and dropping from fourth place in 2010 to eleventh in 2023. Japan was almost static, up just 7% across thirteen years, and finished 2023 marginally below its 2019 figure.
