India Research and Development Spending as a Share of GDP by Year 2000-2020
About This Dataset
India Research and Development Spending as a Share of GDP by Year 2000-2020India is the only series in this set that ends lower than it started. Research spending was 0.76 percent of GDP in 2000, peaked at 0.86 percent in 2008, and fell to 0.65 percent by 2020 - down roughly a quarter from the 2008 high and 15 percent from where it began. No year after 2008 comes in above the one before it, so the decline runs for twelve straight years. Read this as a ratio and not a budget: the Indian economy grew quickly over the same period, so research spending can rise in rupee terms while this line falls. The gap with China, which reached 2.58 percent by 2023, opened up almost entirely within these twenty years.
